Reflections from AAG 2024: Transforming Aged Care Through Innovation and Collaboration
Opening Keynote Inspiration
The conference opened powerfully with Rev James "Jim" Colville AM, Tasmania's Senior Australian of the Year, setting an inspiring tone for the discussions ahead. His perspective on community service resonated deeply with my own experiences in aged care.
Technology Breaking New Ground
I was particularly excited to see the innovative use of technology in aged care. The e-DiVA virtual assistant platform for dementia family carers stood out as a game-changer. During the hands-on demonstrations, I was struck by how such solutions could transform daily care routines.
Workforce Development Insights
The masterclass on workforce development revealed fascinating approaches to building capacity. The presentation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged care training particularly caught my attention, showcasing innovative methods for cultural competency development.
Think Tank Experience
The think tank session on "Unlocking Potential: Translating Evidence into Everyday Aged Care Practice" was a highlight for me. Working alongside experts like Associate Professor Anita Goh, we tackled real-world challenges in implementing evidence-based practices. The collaborative energy in the room was palpable as we brainstormed solutions.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Focus
A standout session explored Telehealth interventions for depression and anxiety in older adults. The discussion around digital stories within residential aged-care settings particularly resonated with my previous work in mental health support.
Future Directions
The Gary Andrews International Fellow presentation by Susana Concordo Harding from the International Longevity Centre Singapore offered valuable global perspectives. Her insights into international best practices left me contemplating new possibilities for our local context.
Personal Takeaways
What I found most valuable was the emphasis on practical implementation. The conference wasn't just about theoretical frameworks - it provided tangible tools and strategies we could apply immediately in our practice settings. The mix of research presentations and interactive sessions created a rich learning environment that will influence my approach to aged care service delivery.
Through these three days, I've gained not just knowledge but a renewed sense of purpose in transforming aged care services. The connections made and ideas shared will undoubtedly shape the future of our field.
